Wakulla County Emergency Operations Center (EOC)

Building Resilience: The Wakulla County Emergency Operations Center

The Importance of Resilience

Building a resilient EOC goes beyond construction—it ensures continuity of operations in the most challenging circumstances. By integrating advanced structural, mechanical, and electrical systems, the Wakulla County EOC empowers first responders and county leaders to protect lives and infrastructure during disasters, demonstrating the community’s commitment to long-term safety and recovery.

In October 2018, Hurricane Michael swept through the Florida Panhandle, leaving a path of devastation and highlighting the critical need for a dedicated Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Wakulla County. At the time, the county lacked a centralized facility to coordinate emergency response efforts, which underscored the importance of creating a resilient, multifunctional hub to safeguard the community during future disasters.

The new Wakulla County EOC was designed to address this urgent need, serving as a command center during emergencies and providing essential resources such as shelter for first responders, workspace for county leaders, and a state-of-the-art 911 dispatch center.

Built for Strength and Sustainability

The EOC is a secure, hardened structure capable of withstanding 165 mph wind speeds, ensuring it remains fully operational during a Category 5 hurricane. Elevated to meet Florida’s coastal construction regulations, the masonry building incorporates a curtain wall system at the entry vestibule and includes:

  • Reception area
  • Offices
  • Operations room
  • 911 dispatch center
  • IT and radio rooms
  • Breakroom
  • Restrooms with showers

The Wakulla County Emergency Operations Center represents a forward-thinking investment in community resilience, ensuring that critical operations continue uninterrupted during emergencies. This project exemplifies the power of innovative design and collaboration in protecting and empowering communities.
