HAPPY SPRING READERS. This year spring falls on March 20 and will end on June 21. If you haven’t already done your spring cleaning now is the time to do it! So, with our help at Hammond Design Group we went and asked not one, not two, but fifty local architects/architectural interns what are some spring-cleaning tips and tricks they do each year to prepare for the spring season. Below you will find our top 25 hacks to your spring cleaning routine this spring! HAPPY CLEANING!!!

  1. CLEANING THE WINDOW TRACKS
    1. A small amount of baking soda first then adding some white vinegar will get all of that nasty built up gut that’s been there for years (or months).
  2. CLEANING THE MICROWAVE WITH LEMONS
    1. Put lemon slices into a cup of boiling water and allow for the cup to sit for a couple of minutes creating steam inside of an off microwave and then wipe clean with ease.
  3. VODKA ANYONE?
    1. Using Vodka in a spray bottle to slightly mist your mattress will kill any odor causing bacteria.
    2.  And while you’re at it feel free to pour yourself a drink.
  4. CLEAN YOUR AIR VENTS WITH A BUTTER KNIFE
    1. Take a clean with soaked in your favorite cleaning supply and wrap the butter knife with the towel and use that to clean down each slat.
  5. LET IT GO METHOD
    1. Help you closet breathe! If you haven’t worn it in the past two years…. Toss it!
  6. ONE USE WONDER
    1. If you have any items in your that we’ve used once or never at all? That is a sign of a one-use wonder item and it’s probably a good idea to let it go.
  7. GARAGE ORAGANIZATION
    1. Maximum your space in your garage by purchasing shelves or hanging hooks to be able to store items properly or also donating items to charity can help you get rid of the unwanted cluster.
  8. PACE YOURSELF
    1. Everything doesn’t have to be in one day! Take a week or two to get things done. You will be prouder of yourself by completely daily task and you will not burnout ad easily. And architects know a thing or two about burning out especially in college.
  9. BUY ORGANIZERS LAST
    1. Believe it or not purchase your organizers last you will be surprised to know that you don’t need that many once you go through your items and see that many things have a home already.
  10. GO VERTICAL!
    1. Take up the wall space…..you’ve earned it kiddo! While your taking up that wall space throw up some curtains! Then after your done grab the vodka from the third tip and relax your almost done but always remember tip number eight.
  11. SMALL INTERIOR DESIGNER TRICK
    1. Use decorative boxes and fake books for storing things in the living room. Trust me you can turn your clustered coffee table into a coffee table out of dwell magazine.
  12. HOOKS, HOOKS, AND MORE HOOKS
    1. Hooks will help keep things off your floor this Spring season.

DESIGNER TIP: USE STYLISH HOOKS IN ENTRY WAYS.

  1. CLEAN YOUR DISWASHER THE RIGHT WAY
    1. Place a dishwasher safe cup inside your dishwasher with plain white vinegar. Use the hottest water available to run a cycle and this will help wash away any greasy grime, and it helps sanitize the dishwasher.
  2. PUT THE TRASH CAN TO USE! SERIOUSLY!
    1. Throw away old things like makeup, expired sunscreen and medicine, plasticware with no lid, unused cookbooks, expired coupons etc.
  3. Cleaning Grout
    1. A clean grout is something that everyone wants in their house. Use baking soda first then use a spray bottle that you emptied earlier from tip ten and fill that up with cleaning vinegar and spray it directly on the grout that is covered with baking soda. Let the solution sit and bubble only for a few minutes then scrub, rinse, and wipe and boom, its clean.
  4. VINEGAR IS ACTUALLY AMAZING
    1. Use that same baking soda and vinegar mix in your sink to get rid of any unwanted smells and germs.
  5. MAKE YOURSELF A CHECKLIST
    1. Make your own personal room to room checklist so you don’t miss anything by accident (or on purpose).
  6. DO YOU HAVE A PUPPY AT HOME?
    1. New puppies have a slight problem with peeing on carpet so during your spring cleaning let’s get the stains out for good. If it is still wet get salt and let it sit for two hours and boom vacuum the salt and watch the stain disappear. If it is dry use vinegar, pick up liquid with a towel (step on it) and then later rub with a baby wipe. Another alternative is shout, oxy clean, and a mix of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia.
  7. Pillows = HAPPINESS
    1. Machine wash your pillows with baking soda and regular detergent and then cover two tennis balls with socks and fluff pillows in dryer with tennis balls.
  8. SINCE YOU ARE CLEANING….
    1. Microwave your sponge to kill 99% of germs and bacteria
  9. Clean the washer? WHAT? YOU SURE?
    1. Yup!! Just wash your washer on a regular cycle with a little bleach and hot water.
  10. THE SMELL GOOD HOUSE
    1. Place two full caps of vanilla extract in a coffee cup, then place in the oven at 300 degrees for one hour and within twenty minutes the whole house smells like HEAVEN.
  11. SURE, GO AHEAD AND HAVE SOME KOOL-AID
    1. According to Real Simple, pouring the lemonade Kool-Aid packet into the dishwasher detergent cup is able to remove lime deposits and iron stains. WOW!
  12. THE OLDEST TRICK IN THE BOOK
    1. Oldie but goodie! Use newspaper to get streak free windows
  13. LAST BUT NOT LEAST!
    1. ENJOY YOUR SPRING THE BEST WAY YOU KNOW HOW!
